Garlic is native to northeastern Iran and Central Asia and has been used for seasoning food and as traditional medicine since ancient times. It is related to the onion, shallots, leek and chives. Garlic can be grown year round if the climate is mild. Much of the American production of garlic comes from a town called Gilroy in California.
